Richard Sweeney was born in Huddersfield, England in 1984. He discovered a natural talent for sculpture at Batley School of Art and Design in 2002, which led him to the study of Three Dimensional Design at the Manchester Metropolitan University, where he concentrated on the hands-on manipulation of paper to create design models, which ultimately developed into sculptural pieces in their own right.
Richard creates sculptures inspired by the organic structures and growth patterns in nature. Driven by curiosity to discover three dimensional forms through the physical manipulation of material, he takes a hands-on approach to creation, utilising the unique properties of mundane materials to discover unique forms, working predominantly with paper as a sculptural medium. He has lectured at universities internationally and regularly holds workshops to share his knowledge of paper folding and construction techniques.
Richard is represented by Victor Felix Gallery, London.
Paper sculpture, Fluid Forms gives an insight into Richard’s artistic practice and provides step-by-step examples of the paper folding techniques used in his work. The book is available in English, German and French language editions. A second edition, English language paperback with additional content was released in November 2021.
Richard regularly holds workshops at West Dean College of Arts, Sussex, UK. He has engaged in lectures and workshops at universities and institutions worldwide.
